On a serious note, there is something absolutely beautiful about turning very special #textiles into custom pieces for a space that you are entrusted to be a part of by creating with your hands, articles that others will make memories with.
I love being an #artisan and making things with my hands for others to enjoy! I paint, draw, write, sow and make many other things for the spiritual joy of offering my clients and community, something truly made with love, from my hands to theirs!

Thank you for all the love and support! It is such an honor to be nominated along so many amazing people and it it’s quite a grace to see my gifts and passions being appreciated by a community ( local and abroad) that I love so dearly! Couldn’t wait tomorrow for my #thankfultuesday so here I am 😉 but as a #memorylanemonday fun fact the park where I walked today is one that I would visit very often when my kids were smaller and it’s during one of my walks there that the idea for my very first book came to me…I rushed home on that Saturday because my characters came alive on that path and started having a whole conversations….i rushed to my computer and typed feverishly everything that was coming fast to me…when I was done i realized that I had written a book and I remember staring my screen going “ now what?!” I then called my daughter and told her that I think I wrote a 📕 , that day a friend visited and my daughter proudly told her “ Miss Rita, my mom wrote a book…” I printed that first draft with more questions than answers….and today…I still don’t know what the future holds but I know it takes good people along the way…thank you for your love and support!

With 5 Black Excellece of Chattanooga Awards nominations, I think I may turn my Thanksgiving celebration into a whole series 😉 So I am kicking this one off with books, of course…from book 1 that got me that one letter from the White House that I finally framed last year…to a series that include some impactful coloring and activity books…there are countless ways and reasons to say Thank You!
There is nothing easy about writing, sharing, drawing and being vulnerable as a creative but on some occasions like now, the silent battles, the hidden tears offer a reason to pause and smile…it’s also one of the rare occasions when it makes sense to look back…
The thorns, the darts, the arrows and painful things that are overcome to appreciate those 5 nominations may never be detected through smile…while some friends call me a Renaissance Woman, I mainly call myself a Thankful One!
I use to cry because I didn’t know how to use my gifts, now I can have tears of gratitude…while I cry when I get obsessed with more babies ( ideas) to birth!

I am very honored to be nominated for the 2026 BEC Awards, not just in one or two categories but in five.

In 2021 when I received my first nomination ( Best Author) I had just lost my dad and was dealing with a lot of pain that made it impossible to appreciate this honor. I have used my creativity and my service to my community as my #mentalhealth strategy and it is quite a blessing to see that what was therapy to me is being appreciated by the city that I have called home for a couple of decades now.
As a French- speaking girl born overseas, I never would have dreamed of writing books performing on stage etc as an American. I learned English when I was 19….and it took me while to see my diversity and gifts as an asset to my American family. This is about more than the awards, this is about legacy, and as a black child of the African diaspora I know why legacy of excellence matters!
While I share the categories I was nominated in, in addition to asking your support 🗳️ I would also love your support by getting copies of my most recent coloring and activity book. All the art was free handed, no AI, and all the activities will take you on a rich cultural and introspective journey! I am confident that this #book will make a difference in some ways! You can get copies on Amazon or contact me.

It’s funny to think that I grew up with coconut trees in the backyard to watching drop of coconut not even fill my glass…well at least there is 🌺🌺🌺 and #alloco plaintain!

Yooo so my dear @velvetpoetry sent me and @tiggerstitches2003 a photo of @afropolitainmagazine that she took @barnesandnoble last night and LITTLE DID I KNOW that getting a copy of it ( first one since July 2017 when I got my first copy) would turn into such an intimate experience.
First thing I did last night was contact my dear Jasmine Fofana @afrofoodie to congratulate her. After more fun messages this morning i finally got into the rest of the magazine and it felt like I was tracing my life through the details that made the pages so alive and so intimate to me….
I will skip the long caption and work on a Blog post instead…for now enjoy my visual (personal) connection!
Two quick notes though I have been following @swaggy_mo for a while now and he is a whoooole vibe and I especially love him in African outfits
Afropolitain is bilingual, though I don’t always post in French, all my books, most of my poems and stage performances and blogs are bilingual!
Listen to the Self-Love Blessing in French and in English in all streaming music platform!

Have you ever owned a #boombox and had a favorite #cassettetapes?
#analog was a special #musicexperience wasn’t it?
I used to live in West Africa when @llcoolj couldn’t live without his radio l. He had a concert in my hometown and I remember the night my brother woke me up to tell me he met him and hang out with him in his hotel room at what was then called Hotel Ivoire @sofitelabidjan and is still a major landmark and tourist destination.
That night #llcoolj had offered him one of his signature hat. It’s funny to finally understand the lyrics of a song ( and many others) that I could!n’t understand them!
I love how those two artworks sparks so many good memories! ( as long as I don’t think too much of the frustration of spinning old cassettes tapes or crying when your favorite one gets damaged? Anyone else know that struggle?)

Last night during a live poetry show on IG I was asked to suggest a prompt to serve as one of two prompts for the night.
“ The priestess” ( see my previous post to understand the inspiration for the title) was my inspiration for my prompt.
Thé prompt was “ Praying Woman,” “ the first prompt of the night as “a conversation between chaos and silence.”
As a logophile, last night I felt deeper with love with words but I also felt deeper in love with sensitive, intelligent, creative souls.
I wasn’t ready for that experience, how could I? Each poem shared felt like being invite in a special prayer chamber, all unique and intimate and there was one in particular that left me in tears,.
In some part of ( West) Africa there is a divinity practice where some people are said to read Cowry shells the way westerners read tarot cards. Though I do not participate in any divinity practice and love cowry shells for adornments, it felt like the poet who had “left me in tears” had read my shells, the ones from the artwork I am working one, the one from books and reflections I have written the past years…

Last night was yet another reminder of the power of words, and the spirituality of poetry.

#FlashbackFriday from a “ serendipitous Saturday mornig” and Fun Fact Friday

Have you ever been to the Audubon Acres ( home to the historical Trail of Tears) that is the inspiration of a few of my art, particularly The Art of Rooting serie?
Did you know that once a month you can visit the cabin and learn more about its history?

One serendipitous Saturday I was hanging out at the gift shop a little longer than usual,playing with the toy birds when a family came in and a beautiful lady shared with us that her dad was born in the cabin!

She went on introducing me to her daughter and granddaughter, the three are named Walker. In keeping the family’s name as a first name, middle or last name they also kept the proud legacy and shared beautiful details that made me fall in love with the place even more.
It was amazing to hear the granddaughter compare my connection and passion for nature and that land, to her grandfather’s !

We are planning more conversations, and no telling how many more pages, poems or artwork will be birthed next 😉

1) all the illustrations are mine and are hand drawn Nothing was AI generated!
2) I do not believe in using AI to draw or write for me because it defeats the #mentalhealth benefits I get from creating
3) this was my first attempt at #islamicart
4) you do not have to practice Islam to care about any injustice, prejudice and biais toward Muslims & Arabs ( by the way the two are not the same)
5) unlike most Christian fasts, the #ramadan is very rigorous and requires a lot more discipline, so shout out to all the Muslims who are currently fasting!
6)aside from the intro, bio and book descriptions all the texts are bilingual making “Salam” my only book with the most French phrases
7) all the activities ate cultural and humanitarian based it is not about Islam as a religion it is about valuing people from other beliefs and cultures.
8) “Salam” was inspired by my upcoming humanitarian book “what about peace? Cultural and humanitarian activity book!
